I just downloaded what I thought was a student copy of Inventor I used the links provided to download the 3 files and it loaded as expected. When I opened the program I discovered I had not downloaded a student copy but instead a 30 day trial when I entered the serial number. I had problems installing from the page containing the student download. I was then directed to the links and it worked fine.
Will I have to delete what I just downloaded and start over. I have not run or activated the license window that appeared when I opened the program. Software is software is software.. Meaning the download is the same if you want a trial, a free student version or you paid for it.

There's no difference between the trial, student, and commercial software - it's all the same thing. The only change is the active license. If properly registered you would get a educational serial number sent to you, which can be used to license the product with a student license.
If at some point you have a commercial serial number you can use it to activate the commercial license. All without uninstalling. Thanks for the reply. I opted for the Serial Number option. It was then that I got the window with the options to Run or Activate. I will need to use it for more than 30 days since the school has only and I cannot use any files I create in class on my home computer. I suppose I can go ahead and activate the 30 trial and then download the Student Version before the trial expires.
If I accept the trial will it prevent me from downloading the Student Version at a later date? There's no need to download anything again..
Software is the same.. There's no difference.. After 2 or 3 weeks or even the full days and they are sure all parts of the software is running normally, then click Activate. When you Activate your student Serial Number your day trial will automatically be converted into a free 3-yr student license. As long as Autodesk continues this program which all indications are indefinitely you can download each new release as a student and Activate a brand new 3-yr license each year you are in school.
So effectively, you have a perpetual license while in school. I have downloads of educational software in Autocadd, Revit and Inventor It has been a year since I last downloaded but I do not recall getting windows that I did in this case. I did try to activate but it rejected the serial and key numbers. Will try to launch and run and see what happens. Instructor not much help on our personal computers.
Thanks for the help I get on the forums. Every Autodesk product and version that you are entitled to under the educational community requires its own serial and product key. If you haven't requested to have Inventor then you need to do that first to obtain your serial.
Next the product keys for are a little confusing.. The fourth character is based on the letter "I" eye. In addition do not copy and paste your information into the serial and product key window. Type them in. Finally with , the serial and product key is asked after your install and launch the application for the first time. Prior to that, the serial and product key was asked at the time of the installation. That's why you don't remember doing this with your product. But in the end, once you have the software download, installed and even running in a 30 day trial mode, it can simply be converted over to your student assigned serial for Inventor No need to download anything else..
I appreciate all the help I get from the forums. It is apparent that I have little computer skills other than using the software. I am semi-retired and began as a draftsman long before computer aided drafting was introduced. I am quite comfortable using Autodesk software I believe due to my years of experience as a draftsman.

Where is your instructor? The software is the same no matter which Autodesk site you get it from. I recommend to ALL of my students to install in day trial mode. Then run the software for at least 2 or 3 weeks in trial mode to make sure all is well. Each time they start the software they will be prompted to Run in trial or Activate license.
